本片是战争与爱情双线发展的典型电影。

本片的战争线主要讲述了1944年6月，五十万盟军官兵集结完毕，正等待着横渡英吉利海峡的命令。对他们中的许多人来说，这或许就是生命中最后的一天。在盟军发起大规模攻击的命令前，搭载着第六特种部队的军舰已于主力舰队出发前四十分钟起锚，任务是在温特上校的率领下先期登陆，开辟一条通往悬崖下面的通道。

本片的爱情线是以世界大战已经接近尾声时的诺曼底登陆为背景，讲述了一个女人同时爱上两个优秀军人的故事。虽然影片没有把过多的镜头对准激烈震撼的登陆场面，但以此为背景的故事同样堪称是一部荡气回肠的爱情经典之作。

影片的主演之一——罗伯特?泰勒曾以主演著名的《魂断蓝桥》而享誉世界。除此之外，她还在《茶花女》、《圆桌武士》、和《劫后英雄传》中，都有上乘的表演。
